Moving, modifying, or deleting this layer will cause your artwork to misalign when being cut.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"delete_slits\"><\/a><strong>If your product has slits, delete the slits that you DON&#8217;T want to appear on the final piece. <\/strong><br>\nEach potential set of business card slits is stored on a separate layer. When you decide which style of slits you want, delete all of the other slit layers.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"delete_instructions\"><\/a><strong>Delete the &#8220;Instructions&#8221; layer prior to submitting artwork.<\/strong><br>\nThe &#8220;Instructions&#8221; layer must be deleted prior to submission to prevent the instructions from being printed as part of your design. Click the &#8220;Instructions&#8221; layer, then click the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Select &#8220;Yes&#8221; in the confirmation window and the layer will be removed.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"separate-layer\"><\/a><strong>Design in the &#8220;Your Art Here&#8221; layer of our template.<\/strong><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.companyfolders.com\/design\/die-cut-folder-templates\" title=\"Download Template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download our template<\/a> to construct your folder design. Make sure you don\u2019t flatten the image or place design elements directly on the template layer.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"distinctive-color\"><\/a><strong>Separate each spot coated, foil stamped, embossed, or debossed area into its own labeled, color-coded layer.<\/strong><br>\nEach of these imprint areas should be on a separate layer with a clear and specific label. Apply a spot color at 100% to represent each imprint area, such as 100% Magenta for the first area, 100% Yellow for second, etc. This helps us identify the different imprint methods you&#8217;ve selected.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"save-as\"><\/a><strong>Save file as: .AI, .EPS, .PDF, .PSD, .INDD, or .TIF.<\/strong><br>\nThese file formats are the most universal and the ones we are most able to work with.<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.AI<\/strong> is Adobe Illustrator&#8217;s proprietary format, so you&#8217;ll most likely use this file type if you&#8217;re working in Illustrator.<\/li>\n<li><strong>.EPS<\/strong> uses PostScript language to save vector-based files. .EPS files can be created using almost any design program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>.PDF<\/strong> is a platform independent format and is viewable in Acrobat or other software. These files can also be created using almost any design program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>.PSD<\/strong> is Adobe Photoshop\u2019s proprietary format, so if you&#8217;re working with Photoshop, you&#8217;ll want to save your file as a .PSD<\/li>\n<li><strong>.INDD<\/strong> is Adobe InDesign&#8217;s proprietary format, so you&#8217;ll most likely save InDesign files in this format.<\/li>\n<li><strong>.TIF<\/strong> files are designed for saving high-quality graphics and can be created using almost any design program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left;\">\n<h5>Layout<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return to Top<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"avoid-placing\"><\/a><strong>Avoid placing logos or text near or on die-cut slits.<\/strong><br>\nImportant elements should be carefully placed so nothing accidentally gets cropped off. A die-cut slit that intersects with your logo or text can interfere with its legibility.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"1-8-safe-zone\"><\/a><strong>Keep important elements within 1\/8&#8243; safe zone.<\/strong><br>\nJust like important sports events happen on the athletic field, your design should fit inside certain boundaries. Anything &#8220;out&#8221; of the safe zone may get lost when your folder is die-cut. Keeping elements inside the safe zone ensures that your design stays intact through the printing process.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"extend_elements\"><\/a><strong>Extend four color process, PMS printed, foil stamped, or spot coated design elements that touch the cut line to 1\/8&#8243; bleed zone.<\/strong><br>\nA 1\/8&#8243; bleed zone will compensate for the small mechanical variations that occur on the printing press and in the trimming process. These variations may result in small white areas around the edges of your design, unless you have a bleed zone to compensate for mechanical variation and ensure the design prints to the edge of the product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left;\">\n<h5>Photo Images<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return To Top<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"raster-photos\"><\/a><strong>Make raster images 300 DPI at the size they will be printed.<\/strong><br>\nWhen images are constantly being stretched and resized during the design process, it can result in an unappealing grainy look called pixelation. Setting images to the correct resolution (300 DPI) will keep them clear and high quality. To check resolution in Photoshop, click &#8220;Image,&#8221; then &#8220;Image Size.&#8221; In the &#8220;Image Size&#8221; window, you can switch the dimension units to &#8220;inches&#8221; to get a better idea of how large the image will be when it&#8217;s printed.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"embed-all-images\"><\/a><strong>Embed images, or package them with the primary artwork file.<\/strong><br>\nSend all necessary artwork for your design by embedding images in your design program or packaging them in a zip file along with the design file. To embed an image in Illustrator or InDesign, click &#8220;Window,&#8221; then &#8220;Links.&#8221; Select the link to the artwork you wish to embed, click the icon in the upper right corner of the &#8220;Links&#8221; window, and click &#8220;Embed Image.&#8221; Once the layer has been embedded, the original name of the file will disappear from the window; you\u2019ll see a small icon in its place. Be especially sure to check logos, section headings, and contact information, as these are the most viewed areas of text.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"convert-fonts\"><\/a><strong>Convert fonts to outlines, or gather fonts using &#8220;Package&#8221; in Illustrator and InDesign. Send with art file.<\/strong><br>\nConverting fonts to outlines lets us work with your design, even if we don\u2019t have the same fonts as you. Simply click &#8220;File,&#8221; then &#8220;Package&#8221; to select the appropriate settings.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"include_fonts\"><\/a><strong>Include fonts if your final print file is in .PSD format.<\/strong><br>\nUnlike Illustrator or InDesign, Photoshop only packages linked images, not fonts. For best results, gather any font files used in your Photoshop document and include them with your design file in a .zip folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left;\">\n<h5>Four Color Process<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return To Top<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"set-design-file\"><\/a><strong>Set design file and all images to CMYK mode.<\/strong><br>\nPrinting in four color process requires the design file and images to be in CMYK mode; otherwise, colors won&#8217;t print accurately. To convert to CMYK mode in Photoshop, click &#8220;Image,&#8221; then &#8220;Mode.&#8221; The box labeled &#8220;CMYK Color&#8221; should be checked. In Illustrator, click &#8220;File,&#8221; then &#8220;Document Color Mode.&#8221; The &#8220;CMYK Color\u201d box here should be checked.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"colors-are-converted\"><\/a><strong>Convert all RGB or spot colors to CMYK.<\/strong><br>\nAll elements need to be in CMYK mode when printing in four color process. In Photoshop, click on \u201cWindow\u201d then click &#8220;Channels.&#8221; Make sure the colors of the channels are listed as \u201cCMYK.&#8221; In Illustrator, click &#8220;Window,&#8221; then &#8220;Swatches.&#8221; Be sure each &#8220;Color Type&#8221; is set to &#8220;Process Color.&#8221; You can also double-click your color swatches to see more details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left;\">\n<h5>PMS Printing<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return To Top<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"pms-vector-graphics\"><\/a><strong>Make sure all graphics are vector format.<\/strong><br>\nWe recommend using vector graphics for PMS printing. Vector graphics are easier to assign PMS (spot) colors and can easily be edited by non-designers. PMS printing in other formats is possible, but it requires specialized imaging experience and very specific pre-press file set-up.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"every-color-pms\"><\/a><strong>Verify all colors are PMS (spot) colors.<\/strong><br>\nJust like four color process requires CMYK colors, PMS printing requires Pantone (spot) colors in order to achieve accurate colors when printing the design. In Photoshop, double-click on each layer to view its &#8220;Layer Style&#8221; window. Click &#8220;Color Overlay,&#8221; then click the colored square. A window will appear and let you see if the layer is set to Pantone. In Illustrator, click &#8220;Window,&#8221; then &#8220;Swatches.&#8221; Be sure each color has a Pantone setting. You can also double-click your color swatches to see more details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"float: left;\">\n<h5>Foil Stamping<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float: right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return To Top<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"foil-vector-graphics\"><\/a><strong>Make sure all graphics are vector format.<\/strong><br>\nFoil stamping cannot produce color gradations or photos because the details are too small. You&#8217;ll need to use vector images that meet the width and spacing requirements below.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"foil-1-5-thick\"><\/a><strong>Make elements at least 1 pt thick, spaced 1 pt or more apart.<\/strong><br>\nDue to the nature of foil stamping, fine details may not show up well. This includes very thin lettering or tightly spaced design elements. Elements 1 pt or thicker are most likely to show up accurately. Likewise, leaving at least 1 pt space between elements prevents them from bleeding together or becoming illegible.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"foil-elements-on-score\"><\/a><strong>Do not place elements on fold or cut lines.<\/strong><br>\nPlacing foil stamped elements on score lines can cause the foil to peel, damaging the design.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"foil-separate-layer\"><\/a><strong>Separate each foil color onto its own labeled, color-coded layer.<\/strong><br>\nPutting each foil color a separate layer helps avoid confusion and ensures that your design looks exactly the way you want it to.<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"foil-distinct-color\"><\/a><strong>Apply a spot color at 100% to represent each foil color. (100% Magenta for first color, 100% Yellow for second, etc.)<\/strong><br>\nUsing these bright colors to mark each foil color is another way of ensuring that there are no mix-ups when it comes time to print the design. If you want, you can even correspond the spot color to the color of the foil.
